MacCallum’s Barn (Building B)
This building was the stable and winnowing barn for MacCallum’s House (Building A). The building is orientated at 90 degrees across the prevailing wind in order to maximise winnowing efficiency. Winnowing is the process of separating unwanted chaff and dust from grain. At Auchindrain this was originally done by tossing the grain into their air between two opposing doors, so that the through draft blew the dust and the chaff from it.
In a photograph dating from 1904 the building appears to be thatched. It was re-roofed with corrugated iron sometime before 1914. In 1986 the Museum re-roofed it again and a timber-panelled gable was added above wall-head height at the southern end of the building. In 1986 the Museum removed the original partition wall that separated the winnowing barn from the stable and replaced it with a new timber partition.
